Notification that new exemption processes are now in place for cell phone exemption and medical exemption for bags during the school day

Atchison Public Schools is committed to supporting student needs while maintaining a focused, safe, and effective learning environment. Two new exemption processes are now in effect for the 2026-2027 school year.

Students who have a medical need to carry a backpack or bag during the school day may be eligible for a medical exemption. A formal application and documentation from a qualified healthcare provider are required. Medical exemption forms for bags during the school day may be downloaded for completion here.

Students who require the use of a cell phone during the school day for a documented educational, medical, disability-related, or safety need may be eligible for an exemption. A formal application and documentation from a qualified professional are required. Educational, medical, disability-related or safety exemption forms for cell phones during the school day may be downloaded for completion here.

Both exemptions require completion of a district application (linked above) and submission of supporting documentation. Exemptions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Approval is granted for the current school year and must be renewed annually.
