Over the last three years, our students, staff, and parents have displayed remarkable resilience, adaptability, and strength in unprecedented circumstances. We faced numerous hurdles as we transitioned to remote learning, implemented safety protocols, and dealt with the emotional toll of isolation.

The return to normalcy signifies a turning point for USD 409. Our hallways are once again filled with the cheerful chatter of students, the familiar sounds of classroom discussions, and the energy that accompanies face-to-face learning.

Over the past two years, with the adoption of Visible Learning, every certified staff member-all grade level and all content— has been trained and worked tirelessly to create an engaging and enriching learning environment for all our students. They have embraced new teaching methodologies, integrated technology, and developed innovative strategies to bridge any learning gaps caused by the disruptions of the pandemic with fidelity. Their dedication and commitment to our student's education are truly commendable.

This year has brought many firsts and was filled with tremendous growth in and out of the classroom, academically, and with school district activities.  Some of our firsts are:

  • We had our first female bowler, Madisyn Wells,  make it to State Bowling this year

  • Our school record for the 100m Hurdles was broken by Tyeera Heyward.

  • Our boy's basketball team made it to State for 1st time in 8 years

  • This is the first time the high school has had a systematic testing system using ACT.

  • This is the 1st year USD 409 has received a Bronze Star from the State of Kansas, using Naviance as the vehicle to ensure every student in grades 6-12 has an Individual Plan of Study. Every high school student achieved a work-based experience, and all seniors graduated with a portfolio to guide them toward post-secondary success.

  • Central was recognized as the first public school to incorporate the Human Dignity Curriculum.

  • Atchison Elementary School had students who took the initiative to make AES a better place for all students by incorporating an Inclusive Playground and raising money towards all outstanding lunch balances.

As a district, we are proud of our continued growth this year and are excited to see what next year brings. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or  Instagram to see us building successful futures: for every student every day.
