  • Spelling Bee Winners

Julia Greco, fifth grade at Atchison Elementary School, clinched first place in the Atchison County Spelling Bee held at St. Benedict Catholic School on Tuesday. Julia correctly spelled “decrepitude” and then “pterodactyl” to win the gold medal. Shelby Burge, 7th grade at Atchison County Community Junior High School earned the silver medal when “cayenne” was misspelled. Julia and Shelby were among the 44 spellers, grades 5 – 8, from all Atchison County schools participating in the Spelling Bee. It took nine rounds to determine the first and second place spellers. Both Julia and Shelby will advance to the Kansas State Regional Bee in Topeka on Saturday, March 4, at Shawnee Heights High School.
