ATCHISON PUBLIC SCHOOLS SPORTSMANSHIP EXPECTATIONS
September 09, 2007
We are very proud of our athletic programs in Atchison Public Schools. We want to make sure that we have strong support and encouragement from our students, parents, staff, students and fans. We were extremely proud of the sportsmanship and pride exhibited by our players, coaches, students and fans during the fall sports programs. Please remember that good sportsmanship is vital to our success, especially in the confined arena of a gymnasium. We expect all students and patrons to act in a positive manner at Atchison Public Schools games and events.
Rule #52 of the Kansas State High School Activities Association is in effect at all activities at Atchison High School.
This Rule, simply stated, says that all actions by those in attendance must be For not Against; Positive not Negative or Disrespectful.
Atchison Public Schools promotes good sportsmanship by athletes, coaches, students and spectators. We encourage both fans and participants to engage in behavior that promotes pride, enthusiasm and class. Cheer positively for your team. Be an exemplary representative of your team, school and community.
EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS / STUDENTS / SPECTATORS
- Remember that school athletics are learning experiences for students and the athletic programs are part of the educational process.
- A ticket is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to verbally abuse others or act in a disrespectful manner. Positive fan support is an asset, negative actions hurt our entire district and those exhibiting these behaviors will be asked to leave.
- Be a role model! Don’t harass or trash talk opponents or officials before, during or after a contest.
- Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, other spectators and officials. Respect their roles even in you disagree with their judgment. Negative comments or the berating of players, coaches and officials are not in keeping with our philosophy or good forms of modeling.
- Recognize and support the efforts of coaches, officials, leagues, and school administrators.
- Support your child/peer with positive actions and encouragement.
- Accept both victory and defeat with pride and compassion.
- Applaud all participants’ efforts – win or lose.
***Please be aware that any fan that is not exhibiting good sportsmanship will be asked to leave the facility. We cannot and will not tolerate unsportsmanlike actions from spectators.
One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than fifty others preaching it.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOUR ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
Winning is for a day – sportsmanship is for a lifetime.
