Atchison Public Schools, USD 409 Bus Transportation Services
According to the policy of the Board of Education, transportation will be provided to students who are legal residents of USD #409 as follows:
• Any students enrolled at Atchison High School living 1.5 miles or more from school on the route of least travel.
• Any students enrolled at Atchison Middle School living 1.25 miles or more from school on the route of least travel.
• Any elementary student enrolled at Atchison Elementary School will be eligible for transportation at the nearest scheduled pickup point.
• Any students enrolled at Atchison Alternative School living 1.5 miles or more from school on the route of least travel.
Any student enrolled in a nonpublic school that would be eligible for transportation if he/she attended a USD 409 school. Such student may be picked up at and returned to designated points on the regular route established for public school students providing space availability. Such students will be discharged and picked up for the return trip at a comparable point.
• Separate bus routes shall be maintained for elementary students (ECH-K-5) and secondary students.
• Students and employees are subject to videotaping of activities on board all school vehicles.
• The regular route buses will not enter or exit the east gate
(14th Street) of the high school student parking lot.
Safety Regulations Outlined for School Bus Riders - RIDING the bus
is a privilege
Safety is a major concern in the Atchison Public School District. We continually stress the importance of students being safe riders. The bus ride is an extension of the school day and students are under the supervision of school and bus personnel. For this purpose, video cameras are placed on buses to monitor driver safety standards and student behavior.
• Students must be on time; the bus cannot wait for those who are tardy.
• Must follow the driver and para’s instructions.
• Unnecessary conversations with the driver is prohibited. Conversational tone and classroom conduct is to be observed.
• No obscene language, writings, or gestures.
• No hanging out of window, throwing objects in, out or at bus. No improper boarding or departing of bus.
• No tampering with bus equipment or destruction of property.
• No fighting, making threats of bodily harm, pushing, tripping, hitting, spitting, littering, eating or drinking on bus.
• Alcohol, drugs, weapons, tobacco products, animals, glass containers, music/video players and/or headphones, lighters, skateboards, or any articles of an injurious nature to riders or others are not permitted on the bus.
• Students must remain seated while bus is moving.
• If you cross the road do so 10 feet in front of the bus after making sure road is clear.
